How we make it

Every job goes through the same seven stages and the same machines. None of this is secret and none of it is decoration — it is the reason a cupboard door still shuts properly in ten years’ time. Here is the whole thing, in plain English.

The process

Seven stages, every job

Survey

We measure the room ourselves, including how far out of square it is, where the services are and how the floor falls. For awkward openings we laser-scribe with a Leica Disto 3D so the scribes can be cut before anything goes to site.

Drawing

Cabinetry is modelled in Cabinet Vision, windows and doors in Cinch, one-offs and metalwork in Autodesk Fusion. You see plans, elevations and a rendered view, and we revise until you are happy. Nothing is cut before that.

Boards and hardware

Egger board and decor codes, Tricoya where it will get wet, Accoya outside, birch ply, oak and ash for solid work. Blum and Häfele runners and hinges, Titus on volume work, Lamello and Rafix where it has to knock down.

Machining

The drawing becomes a machine program. Sheets are nested and cut with every part labelled; frames, doors and windows go on the 5-axis machine; tenons and beads on the spindle moulder.

Edging and drilling

Edge tape is glued, trimmed, scraped and buffed in one pass, then parts are drilled for exactly the hardware specified. This is the stage that decides whether a cabinet looks made or looks bought.

Assembly and check

Carcasses are built, drawer boxes glued and fitted, LED runs wired and switched on at the bench. Jon checks work before it goes out and has it re-made when it is not right.

Finishing and fitting

Priming and colour matching here; spraying by our specialist finishing partner. Then delivery and fitting by our own crew, or flat-packed to your yard if you are fitting it yourself.

The machines

What each one actually does for you

Mostly Format-4, from the Felder Group, serviced by Felder UK, plus a Holz-Her edgebander serviced by Weinig UK — all in one building in Leigh.

The first machine anything touches. A sliding table saw is essentially a three-metre ruler with a spinning blade at the end of it: the board rides the table, the blade never moves, and the cut comes out dead square.

Square matters more than it sounds. Every later operation — edging, drilling, assembly — is measured from the first two cut edges. Get those wrong and a run of twelve cabinets ends up a centimetre out at the far end of the kitchen.

5.8 m² — it swallows a full 2.8 m × 2.07 m jumbo board whole, which is roughly the size of a double mattress.

Format-4 profit H500

Three axes means a spindle that goes left, forward and down. Five means it can also tilt and swing, so it can approach a part from any angle without letting go of it. That is what makes real joinery possible on a machine.

Pod-and-rail means the part is held on vacuum pods rather than laid on a sheet bed, so this is the machine for solid timber and for anything frame-shaped: doors, windows, stair parts and newel caps. Full mortice and tenon joints, dowel drilling, lock and hinge morticing, moulded profiles, curved and arched heads, box joints and mitred corners for Lamello connectors — all from one program, written in Cinch.

The reason it matters to you is repeatability. The hundredth joint closes exactly like the first, so a set of nine internal doors all hang the same way and a window frame that has to match a 120-year-old opening actually matches it.

Hold it once, cut it everywhere. A part that used to need four machines and four set-ups is cut in one, so nothing drifts between operations.

A nesting cell lays a whole sheet on a vacuum bed, holds it down by suction alone, and cuts every part out of it in one run — drilling the hinge cups and shelf holes as it goes and printing a label for each piece. Nesting software works out how to get the most parts from the fewest boards, which is why a nested kitchen wastes far less board than one cut from a list.

Both cells load the sheet and unload the cut parts on their own, too: a full board goes in one end and labelled parts come off the other while whoever is running them is already setting up the next job. They replaced an older nesting CNC that we loaded and unloaded by hand, swapped out in 2026.

The H150 is itself a 5-axis machine, so it will do angled and shaped work on sheet material that a three-axis router cannot. The H80 is a 4-axis cell and takes the volume: carcase parts, doors, drawer boxes, trade cut-and-drill work.

Between them they also cut our bespoke mouldings, skirtings and cornices, machine Tricoya panels for wet areas and external use, and flatten solid tops and desks.

Three machining centres, two of them 5-axis. Having more than one means a sheet job for a trade customer is not queued behind somebody’s one-off staircase part.

The machine that copies anything. Post us a 20 mm offcut of your skirting, architrave, dado rail or cornice; we model the profile, grind a cutter to match it and run as much of it as you need.

It also cuts tenons on door and window rails and runs the bead on traditional face frames, with cutters ground for the job rather than picked from a catalogue.

20 mm is all we need. That is the length of offcut it takes to reproduce a moulding nobody has made for a hundred years.

Edge tape is what stops a board edge looking like a board edge. This machine glues, trims, scrapes and buffs every visible panel edge in one pass — ABS, PVC, veneer or solid lipping — so the tape follows the panel face with no step to catch your fingernail on. Curves are edged separately by hand for anything that is not straight.

Its Glu Jet system leaves no visible glue line, which matters most on light boards: a white or pale grey door used to show a thin dark seam at every edge, and now it does not. We hold Hranipex and Egger ABS tape by the roll, so we can match an Egger decor exactly — including the Perfectsense matt and gloss boards.

Zero glue line. The join is invisible rather than merely neat — the single clearest difference between a cabinet that looks made and one that looks bought.

Cabinet Vision, Cinch and Fusion

Three tools, each for what it is good at. Cabinet Vision drives the cabinetry: it turns a kitchen into a nest, a drill program and a printed label for every part. Cinch does the same for windows and doors, including the mortice and tenon joints.

Autodesk Fusion is for the one-offs — a bar with bespoke brass ladder frames, a curved reception counter, a jig.

The point of all of it is that your job exists as a correct model before any board is cut, and that the model is what the machine reads — not a number somebody wrote on a bit of board.

Built twice. Once on screen, once for real. The screen build is where mistakes are cheap.

Roof

There are solar panels on the workshop roof, feeding the machines. On a bright day a good part of the cutting is done on sunshine.

Alongside that: we source from sustainable forestry where we can, and offcuts are kept and used rather than skipped — the rack of short ends is where most of our samples and jigs come from.

Machines running on daylight. Not a marketing scheme, just a roof that was doing nothing.
